I first joined Tae kwon do last June 2009, after watching and admiring my two brothers and other jins at the SM Molino competition. At first, I was a bit awkward in my moves during training, knowing that there are a lot of trainees who are much younger and yet higher (in terms of belt) than me. But as the weeks pass by, I gradually became more confident, although there is still a little tension for strenuous warm-ups and sparring.
However, I did not focus on my fears, but did enjoy the training and the healthy competitions instead. I feel my body and stamina improve after training. Moreover, Tae kwon do also taught me great values and character improvement like that of the five tenets of Tae kwon do—self-confidence, modesty, indomitable spirit, perseverance, and etiquette. I learned to be more patient and determined in every aspect of my life. I have learned to fight and stand for what is right. I have also understood the principle that you must learn from you mistakes and you must not easily give up when you lose because it is not yet the end of everything. Real success is not the matter of winning or losing the game, as long as you give your best and sacrifice for every bit of it. Character is much more important and as John Maxwell said, “If you have the will to win, you have achieved half of your success; if you do not, you have achieved half of your failure.” Being positive and determined are the keys.
Joining a sports club is really fun; I get to meet many people and they are all friendly, even our parents become good friends. The coaches are good trainers and motivators. My favorite parts in Tae kwon do training are learning self-defense, and sparring techniques/strategies. I have joined my first national training at Rizal Memorial Coliseum last November 21, 2009. I felt the challenge and at the same time tension. Every game develops my sportsmanship as well as my creativity. I can also say that I have also become brave enough to face challenges knowing that there are my family and friends who are always ready to help and support; teammates and coaches, who are great encourage-rs and molders; and most of all there is God. He strengthens and guide me every time.
